Regional Snapshot

Nelson’s population is only 1% of British Columbia’s population and 1% of the province’s Francophones live in this region. Nelson’s population is in fact 2% Francophones and 7% of the population claims knowledge of French. Aboriginals make up 4% of the region’s population.

The employment income in this region is significantly lower than the provincial average. Among the region’s Anglophones, it is 18% less than Anglophones in British Columbia as a whole. The region’s Francophones earn 5% less than their Anglophone counterparts and 22% less than Francophones in the province as a whole.

The unemployment rate of Francophones in the Nelson region is similar to that of Francophones in the rest of the province, i.e. 6.5% while the region’s Anglophones have a higher unemployment rate (7.3%) than Anglophones in the province as a whole (5.9%). Therefore, in Nelson, Francophones have a lower unemployment rate than Anglophones.

The three predominant industries in the Nelson region are Retail trade (12%), health care and social assistance (11%), and manufacturing (10%). The same industries are predominant provincially, employing similar proportions of the workforce.

In the region, the main occupations are related to sales and service occupations (23%); the trades, transport and equipment operation (19%); and, business, finance and administration (13%). These same occupations dominate province wide, although the trades, transport and equipment operation represent a slightly lower percentage of the workforce on the provincial scale (15%), while sales and service occupations, and business, finance and administration represent a slightly higher share of the workforce, i.e. 25% and 17% respectively.
