Regional Snapshot
The population of Greater Vancouver represents 51% of British Columbia’s population and 54% of the province’s Francophones live there. Francophones make up 2% of this region’s population while 8% claim knowledge of French.
The average employment income for Anglophones and Francophones in the region is practically identical and is 6% above the provincial average for each of these language groups.
The Francophone unemployment rate in Greater Vancouver (6.6%) is similar to that of Francophones in the province as a whole (6.4%) but is higher than unemployment among the region’s Anglophones (5.3%).
In 2006, the predominant industries in Great Vancouver were Retail trade (11%), professional, scientific and technical services (9%), health care and social assistance (9%), and manufacturing (9%). Retail trade, health care and social assistance, and manufacturing are also among the leading industries province wide and in similar proportions.
The Greater Vancouver region’s main occupations are the same as the province’s overall and in similar proportions. These are sales and service occupations (25%), business, finance and administration (19%) and the trades, transport and equipment operation (13%).
