Regional Snapshot
The Kelowna region represents 4% of the total population of British Columbia and 4% of the province’s Francophones live in this region. Francophones make up 2% of Kelowna’s population while 7% of the population claims knowledge of French. The region is also 4% Aboriginals.
The average employment income in the Kelowna region is slightly lower than the provincial average. This difference is bigger with regard to the region’s Francophone population. In fact, the Francophones in this region have an average income that is 80% that of Francophones province wide, and 85% of the income of the region’s Anglophones.
While the unemployment rate for the region’s Anglophones (5%) is slightly lower than that of Anglophones in the province as a whole (5.9%), the unemployment rate of the region’s Francophones (6.8%) is slightly higher than that of Francophones in the province as a whole (6.4%).
Randail trade, construction, and health care and social assistance are the three predominant industries in the Kelowna region, with 13%, 12% and 11% respectively of the workforce. In the province of British Columbia, randail trade (11%) and health care and social assistance (10%) are also among the leading industries.
Like the province as a whole, the main occupations in the Kelowna region are related to sales and service occupations (26%); business, finance and administration (18%); and, the trades, transport and equipment operation (11%).
