Regional Snapshot

Victoria’s population is 8% of the population of British Columbia and 10% of the province’s Francophones live there. Francophones make up 2% of this region’s population, while 11% claim to have knowledge of French. This region also includes 3% Aboriginals.

The average employment income of Anglophones and Francophones in the region is essentially identical and is slightly above the provincial average for each of these linguistic groups. The $37,550 average income of Francophones in the Victoria region is 7% above the average of Francophones in the province as a whole.

The unemployment rate for Francophones in the region is a low 3.3%. This is lower than the rate for the region’s Anglophones, which is 4.3% but nearly half the unemployment rate of Francophones in the province as a whole (6.4%).

In 2006, the predominant industries in the Victoria region in terms of employment percentages were public administration (13%), health care and social assistance (12%) and Retail trade (11%). Retail trade, and health care and social assistance are also among the predominant industries province wide and in similar proportions.

Victoria’s main occupations are the same as for the province as a whole and in similar proportions. In Victoria, sales and service jobs represent 27% of the workforce; business, finance and administration account for 18%; and, the trades, transport and equipment operation represent 12%.
