Simcoe County has 3.5% of Ontario’s population and is home to 1.9% of the province’s Francophones. Francophones make up 3% of the population while Aboriginals account for 3% as well. Nearly 8% claim knowledge of French.
The county’s average employment income ($36,111) is 8% below that of the province as a whole. Francophones and Anglophones have essentially identical average incomes, which are also equal to the region’s average income.
Unemployment among both Francophones and Anglophones in the county is below that of Ontario overall and unemployment among Francophones is lower than among Anglophones. Unemployment is 5.8% among the county’s Anglophones and 4.2% among Francophones.
The county’s three predominant industries are the same as in Ontario as a whole. The manufacturing sector ranks first, with 15% of the region’s workforce employed in this sector. Construction (9%) and accommodation and food services (7%) are among the leading industries in the region although they are not among the predominant industries provincially.
Occupations in sales and service predominate in terms of workforce percentages, both regionally (27%) and provincially (24%). Occupations in the trades, transport and equipment operation (18%) and business, finance and administration (15%) rank second and third in this county.
