London has 3.5% of Ontario’s population and is home to 1% of the province’s Francophones. Francophones make up 2% of the population which is also 2% Aboriginals. However, 8% of the region’s population claims knowledge of French.
In 2005, the average employment income in London ($36,229) is below the Ontario average. Among Francophones, the average income is $40,092, which is 11% above the average income for the region’s Anglophones and above the average income for the region as a whole.
Anglophone unemployment in the region is lower (6.0%) than unemployment for Anglophones in Ontario overall (6.4%) while the region’s Francophones have a slightly higher unemployment rate (6.2%) than Ontario Francophones overall (6.1%).
The predominant industries and occupations in London, in terms of workforce percentages, are very similar to Ontario as a whole. Manufacturing (14%), health care and social assistance (13%) and randail trade (11%) are the leading industries while the region’s dominant occupations are in sales and service (24%), business, finance and administration (18%) and the trades, transport and equipment operation (14%).
