Regional Snapshot
The Regional Municipality of Niagara has 4% of Ontario’s population and is home to 3% of the province’s Francophones. Francophones make up 4% of the region’s population while slightly more than double that percentage (9%) claims knowledge of French.
The region’s average employment income is 15% below that of Ontario as a whole. The average employment income of Anglophones ($33,295) and Francophones ($34,641) is very similar. Unemployment is lower among Francophones (4.7%) than Anglophones (6.1%).
Two of the five leading industries in the Regional Municipality of Niagara are not among the leading industries for Ontario as a whole. Manufacturing and Retail trade are in first and second place respectively in both the region and province, employing 14% and 11% of the workforce. The accommodation and food services sector (11%) and construction (6%) dominate regionally but not provincially. The leading occupations in the region are the same as for the province, although the workforce percentages are slightly different.
