Regional Snapshot
The Ottawa region has 7% of Ontario’s population and is home to 25% of the province’s Francophones. Francophones make up 18% of the Ottawa region, however 40% of the population claims knowledge of French.
The average employment income in the region is higher than the provincial average. The average employment income of Francophones ($44,927) and Anglophones ($44,307) is similar both regionally and provincially.
The Ottawa region’s unemployment rate is below that of Ontario as a whole. Unemployment is 5.9% among Anglophones and 5.8% among Francophones.
The predominant industries in the region are the same as at the provincial scale with the exception of the public administration sector, which occupies first place in the region, employing 20% of the workforce. Provincially, manufacturing is in first place, employing 14% of the workforce.
The same occupations dominate regionally as provincially with the exception of natural and applied sciences and related occupations, which employ 13% of the region’s workforce while in Ontario as a whole, the trades, transport and equipment operation account for 14% of the workforce. Occupations in sales and service are in first place with 22% and 24% respectively of the regional and provincial workforces.
