Regional Snapshot
The Cochrane Region has 0.7% of Ontario’s population and is home to 6.6% of the province’s Francophones. At 48%, a high proportion of the region’s population is Francophone, and nearly two-thirds of the population claim knowledge of French. The proportion of Aboriginals in the region (11%) is five times higher than the proportion of Aboriginals making up Ontario’s overall population (2%).
The region’s employment income is lower than the Ontario provincial average. However, the region’s Francophones and Anglophones have comparable average employment incomes ($34,536 and $35,643, respectively).
The region’s population has a higher unemployment rate than Ontario as a whole, with 9.5% of Anglophones and 7.7% of Francophones unemployed in 2006.
The region’s leading industries and occupations are overall the same as those for Ontario overall. However, we note that the mining and oil and gas extraction sector (7%) is one of the region’s leading industries, while this is not the case for the province as a whole.
