Regional Snapshot
The Nipissing Region has 0.7% of Ontario’s population and is home to 3.6% of the province’s Francophones. Francophones make up one-quarter of the region’s population, while 38% claim knowledge of French. Nearly one inhabitant in ten in the region is Aboriginal.
The population in this region has an average income that is well below that of the provincial average and there is a similar difference bandween the average income of the region’s Francophones ($30,699) and the provincial Francophone average ($40,344).
Unemployment among the region’s Anglophones is 8.3% and 8.5% among Francophones, i.e. approximately 2 points higher than the provincial average.
The predominant industries in the region, in terms of workforce percentages, are different from those that dominate provincially. For example, the main industry in Ontario as a whole is manufacturing (14%) but the industry is not among the top five in the Nipissing region. Accommodation and food services (9%) and public administration (8%) head the list in the Nipissing Region while these are not among Ontario’s main industries over all.
The region’s most popular occupations are comparable to those for the province as a whole. Sales and service (28%), business, finance and administration (17%) and the trades, transport and equipment operation (17%) are the top three occupational groups in the region. These sectors also dominate provincially though in somewhat different proportions.
