Regional Snapshot
The Prescott-Russell Region has 0.7% of Ontario’s population and is home to 9% of the province’s Francophones. Francophones make up 68% of the population and 85% of the population claims knowledge of French.
The average employment income is below the provincial average for Ontario. At $35,189 in the region, it is 11% below the provincial average of $39,986. The average employment income of Francophones in the region is $34,463 and is therefore 15% below the provincial average for Francophones ($40,344).
Unemployment in the region is a great deal lower than in the province as a whole. Unemployment among the region’s Francophones is 3.8% compared to 5.3% for the region’s Anglophones; Francophones in the province as a whole have an unemployment rate of 6.1%.
Neither of the predominant industries in the region in terms of workforce percentages, namely public administration (13%) and construction (10%), is among the leading industries provincially. Retail trade (11%) and health care and social assistance (11%) are also important in the regional economy.
The main occupations in the region are the same as for the province overall and in similar proportions of the workforce. The three leading employment sectors are sales and service (22%), business, finance and administration (19%) and the trades, transport and equipment operation (19%).
