Regional Snapshot

Windsor has 3% of Ontario’s population and is home to 2.5% of the province’s Francophones. Francophones make up 4% of the region’s population, while 10% claim knowledge of French.

The average employment income in the region is $38,075, i.e. 3% below the Ontario provincial average. Francophones in the region have an average income of $36,609, which is 9% below the provincial average for Francophones and 4% below the average for Anglophones in Windsor.

At 7.9%, among Francophones and Anglophones alike, Windsor’s unemployment rate is higher than the provincial average.

In terms of workforce percentages, manufacturing is the predominant sector in the region as well as for the province. However, it is much more dominant at the regional level as it employs 24% of the workforce compared to 14% for the province. The other two leading industries in the region are Retail trade (11%) and health care and social assistance (10%).

The leading occupations in the region are similar to those in Ontario as a whole and in comparable proportions. However, processing, manufacturing and utilities (13%) are ranked fourth regionally while this industry is not among the province’s leading sectors.
